Apache FLIR Video

Warning: graphic stuff.

This is a 4.7 megabyte mpeg video taken from an Apache AH-64D helicopter in Iraq using the ship’s FLIR (forward looking infrared) camera.

The Apache crew was two kilometers away and spied the Iraqis with weaponry in a field the night. It’s unclear weather the weaponry is a gun, RPG launcher, or what.

Unfortunately for those on the ground, the Apache is equipped with an automatic 30 mm McDonnell Douglas M230 chain gun firing 625 rounds per minute.

Addendum: here’s the full length video (12 MB).

Actually, there is another longer edit out there. In the longer version you can actually see that the guys on the ground were taken out becuase they were stashing guns in the field. Also, it shows just how deliberate the pilots were about engagement. You hear the exchange between the pilot and his flight leader as well as the sqaudron commander who finally gives the go ahead to engage. If you have not seen it, you really should take a look at it. Gives you even more of an appreciation for what our guys do and how well they do it.

Can you point me to a place where I can get the longer version? I’d love to see it!

War is ugly! They wouldn’t even know what killed them. I look forward to the day when people can sort out their differences over a cold beer and a game of pool. God bless you Americans.

What really pisses me off are the comments on the site that this video is hosted on. What damn right do they have to say anything about what our servicemen and women do? They did their job. War is a very beautiful thing for those who have never experienced it. The pilots aboard that AH-64 would not have fired if they felt that it was anything other than what it appeared to be: Weaponry.

Yes….I agree. It is hard to make judgements since we aren’t seeing the full picture. We also don’t see what happened before the video started and the video seems to have been edited. However…even if the Iraqis in the video were insurgents (notice I didn’t say terrorists), it is a violation of the Geneva Conventions to kill a wounded combatant when he no longer poses a threat. Clearly on the video, the Apache crew did do this. For this, there really is no excuse.
